It's great that the links sometimes appear in the SERPs. I experienced that with a small website. The plugin was active for 3 years on a larger niche site and then there were problems with it after a WP update and I deleted it without replacing it. However, the sales and rankings did not get any worse. Personally, I prefer to scan the text quickly by scrolling rather than by reading a table of contents.
